Hollywood + Bollywood = Epic Indira Gandhi Epic!
For years Hollywood and Bollywood have wanted to unite to make a fuckoff epic movie about Indira Gandhi, the first female Prime Minister of India, who defied the US, pissed off Nixon, and cosied up to the Soviet Union during the height of the Cold War to fight the 1971 Bangladesh liberation war.
There have been talks of Kathryn Bigelow (The Hurt Locker), Jonathan Demme (Rachel Getting Married) or Jodie Foster (you know) directing. Of Helen Mirren reprising her role as Queen Elizabeth II. Of Tom Hanks and Tommy Lee Jones playing Lyndon B Johnson and Richard Nixon respectively. Of Emily Watson playing Margaret Thatcher.
This year the film, entitled Birth of a Nation, will finally get made (or at least, finally get started). They have a director, Bruce Beresford (Driving Miss Daisy), and casting will begin in May. More info on the film can be found here.
